About (English)
- Nuestra Voz is a nonprofit organization helping Spanish speakers participate actively in the online conversation, with a focus on citizen journalism and social media.
- Encuentro Nuestra Voz is a conference for bloggers, citizen journalists, social media experts and other individuals and institutions interested in the online participation of Spanish speakers in the United States.
mission
- Nuestra Voz seeks to extend the benefits of online participation and self-expression to all Spanish speakers by actively engaging in advocacy, education, and awareness, reaching out to underrepresented and less-favored communities.
- Nuestra Voz helps professional journalists and traditional media in Spanish transition successfully to the digital era, encouraging them to become more community-oriented, dynamic, and participatory.
- Encuentro Nuestra Voz seeks to identify and address the needs and challenges of Spanish-speaking Web 2.0 users in the US, while bringing together and strengthening existing on-line communities. In addition, the Encuentro provides a forum where communication professionals can discuss and learn about the transformations in journalism.
why is Encuentro Nuestra Voz important?
- There are more than 40 million Spanish speakers in the United States, half of which are Internet users. This percentage is growing rapidly (1). The percentage of Spanish-speaking Internet users with high-speed Internet (77%) is higher that the United States average (2).
- User-generated content in Spanish language in the US has a the largest unrealized potential of any community, as one third of Hispanic Internet users will be 18 or younger by 2010 (3).
- Content, services, influence and decision-making are migrating online. Spanish speakers are using the Web to create and share content, and to connect to each other.
- Spanish speakers in the US are a part of a much larger community, composed of 500 million people in 25 countries around the world.
what about the English language?
- Nuestra Voz doesn’t challenge the role of English as the primary language of the US. English language is thriving in the US and around the world, and has effectively become the lingua franca for much of the planet. We believe that all US residents should be fluent in English.
- However, having a choice of language is essential for the cohesion and advancement of the Hispanic communities in the US, ultimately resulting in a richer cultural heritage for the nation as a whole.
